Caring For Your Diamond Engagement Ring

Three Stone Diamond Ring - Hand crafted by The Occasional Goldsmith

A diamond ring is not just a beautiful piece of jewellery; it's often a symbol of love, commitment, or personal achievement. Whether it's an engagement ring, a family heirloom, or a special gift, taking care of your diamond ring at home is essential to maintain its brilliance and longevity. This doesn’t require complicated tools or professional knowledge—just consistency and care. With gentle cleaning, proper storage, and mindful handling, you can ensure that your diamond ring continues to shine beautifully for years to come. With a few simple steps, you can keep your ring sparkling like new.

1. Regular Cleaning

Over time, oils, lotions, dirt, and everyday grime can dull the sparkle of your diamond. Cleaning your ring regularly helps maintain its shine. The easiest and safest way to clean a diamond ring at home is with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush. Soak the ring in soapy water for 15–20 minutes, then gently scrub it with the toothbrush, especially around the setting where dirt can build up. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry with a soft lint-free cloth.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Never use bleach, chlorine, or abrasive household cleaners on your diamond ring, as these can damage the metal and dull the diamond. Even some jewellery cleaners may be too strong, especially for rings with additional gemstones or delicate settings.

3. Store It Properly

When you're not wearing your diamond ring, store it in a soft pouch or a separate compartment in a jewellery box to avoid scratches. Diamonds are extremely hard but can still scratch other jewellery, and metals can get damaged from rubbing against harder stones.

4. Remove During Activities

Take off your ring during activities like gardening, exercising, cleaning, or swimming. These activities can expose your ring to potential damage, loss, or chemicals that may weaken the setting.

5. Inspect It Regularly

At home, you can gently check if the diamond is secure in its setting by touching it and seeing if it moves. If you notice any looseness, bent prongs, or a change in how the ring fits, we recommend contacting The Occasional Goldsmith, and we can advise you on any repair or maintenance work which will need to be carried out.
